Young Americans is, ultimately, a story about family. Following two roadtrips, the first with Joe and his new bride, and the second many years later with Joe and his adopted daughter, the show highlights that although life is full of pain, difficulty, and bumps we don't see coming - we should still try. The projections highlight the abstract nature of memory, allowing moments of the past to be larger than life and a bit more artistic, while the present moments are more grounded in reality. The scenic design attempts to capture the flexibility and compactness of a roadtrip across the country, encapsulating the feeling of being stuck in the same car with the same person for days on end, watching the vastness of the road go by.
