SOPHIE SMRCKA

As a scenic and projections designer, I am most passionate about stories that consider the human condition, what it means to be alive, and our impact on the world around us. I seek to lift up the stories of people who are less understood, under-served, and under-represented. My hope is that every environment I design emphasizes the story being told, and helps influence audience’s perspectives of the world.
In my design process, I work to find the core message of each story, and build an environment that embraces and highlights the people within. I believe the people should be the biggest and most important thing onstage. I also believe that the people are the most important part of the process, and collaboration with my team is hugely valuable to what I do.

I hold an MFA in Scenic and Digital Media Design from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, and a BA in Theatre from the University of Denver.

I am currently local to the DMV area. I am accessible to the Baltimore, DC, and New York markets. I also have local housing in Denver, Pennsylvania, and Albuquerque. I am currently available for regional freelance work as well as regional assistant work - both in person and remote.

Outside of my theatrical pursuits, I love running, my two gorgeous cats, a good cup of coffee, and a good book.
